Transport – Lindos:

Lindos (in Greek: Λίνδος) is a town and an archaeological site on the east coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, in the Dodecanese in southeastern Aegean Sea.

It is about 55 km south of the town of Rhodes and its fine beaches make it a popular tourist and holiday destination. Lindos is situated in a large bay and faces the fishing village and small resort of Haraki.

The cheapest way to get to Lindos is by Bus. The buses depart regularly from the station nearby the Tourist Information Centre.

There is a booth where you buy your ticket from, and this has the Timetables as well.

If you sit on the left hand side of the Bus, you get great views of the ocean, and seaside resorts, and also a gorgeous little Greek Chapel.

There is fantastic ocean scenery most of the way, and the views coming into Lindos are beautiful.

Have your camera out on the trip, you should be able to get some good photos! I did!COST IN 2009 was 4.5 euro One way.

Below gives you information for bus timetables over Rhodes. When you reach Lindos, a free shuttle will take you down the hill to the town.

It also fetches back up the hill for free to catch the return bus.

The main east coast road swoops out Rhodes Town, through Faliraki, past Tsambika beach and above Lindos. There are some steep hills to climb and a couple lay-bys where you can pull over to take in the view. It’s at Lindos you’ll hit a major traffic black spot, when the highway skirts along a car park. You’ll be faced with cars and scooters coming from every direction, plus there’s a major bus stop conveniently located on a bend in the road.

This is the main car park for Lindos, the old town of which is closed to all traffic, except for taxis which can use a rank on the edge of the village.

First thing in the morning, even in early October, there were about two dozen coaches parked up here with daytrippers. No doubt in the summer parking is near impossible. But when we came here later that evening for a night out we found the car park is free after 7pm and nearly empty. You also have the option of coming to Lindos as her ancient residents did, aboard any of the numerous boats that come in from Rhodes Town, Pefki and the other resorts.

Getting around once in Lindos:

Lindos Hotels - Getting around once in Lindos - the donkey!

Lindos Hotels - Getting around once in Lindos - the donkey!

The most common form of transport in Lindos is The Donkey!

Working from the Donkey Station near the Main Square the Donkeys take tourists to and from the Acropolis. They also meet the Rhodes boat excursions to carry tourists up the hill from the Pallas Beach. You will regularly have to stand aside in the narrow streets while the donkeys pass – and… watch where you tread!

The only other transport allowed in the streets are bicycles, motor-bikes, the 3-wheel motorised carts (used to deliver luggage to villas and the narrowest of vans (used for deliveries and building works).

TAXIS – work from the taxi rank in the Main Square. There is a set Tarif for journeys – so check your price before going and, if necessary, stand your ground if the driver wants to charge you more than you think is right. If you need to go to the airport by Taxi on a regular departure day – make sure you book your taxi a day or so in advance. Again – verify the price when you do this – there may be a higher charge for booking in advance! Taxis are almost always Mercedes and almost always go too fast.

BUSES – There is a regular bus service between Rhodes Town and the south of the island. It takes about 1 hour twenty minutes to get to Rhodes from Lindos (calling at many villages and towns on the way). The cost in 2004 was about 3 euros 50 cents. You have to go to the bus stops at the main car-park, above the village, to catch a bus to Pefkos or Rhodes. Early in the morning the bus sometimes comes down to the Main Square. During the main part of the day there is a shuttle bus service between the Main Square and the Main car-park. The bus is likely to be hot so take a drink with you.

HIRE CAR – If you arrive at Lindos by car, you will have to park at one of the free main car-parks or in the Pay and Display spaces. Tourists should use the Main car-park at Krana, above the village. If you are visiting St Paul’s Bay, you can use the car park above the Bay – it is mainly used by residents and Hire Car Rental companies. The upper section of road between the top car park at Krana and the main square and along the road to the main beach both have Pay and Display spaces (I think the cost is several euros for the day). The buses carrying tourists to and from the airport load and offload at “Lindos Reception” at this car-park.

Avoid driving into the Main Square at all costs. There is very little room to move around and you will only make a problem far worse and, more than likely, get shouted at! The only reason for driving into the Main Square is to access the road to the main beach (where there is, rarely, an odd parking space). To do this you have to drive into the Square, drive around the tree, keeping to the right, go to exit the Square and then turn right into the road to the beach. Use the same procedure when leaving from the road to the beach.
